This is Part 1 of a 2-part series about the Houthis. Why the Houthis?

This is why. “Demand Uplift”:

Clarkson’s, from June 2024

I have spent the last 9 months reading shipping analyst reports which forecast a normalization of Red Sea traffic… They have all been wrong.

Why? Perhaps because — collectively — they made little effort to understand the psychology of the main actors. That is what I aim to do in this 2-part series.

Please note: This is not meant to be a comprehensive look at Yemen or the Houthis. This is meant to help inform your view of the Houthis and their staying power as a disruptive force in the Middle East.

As background for a 1:1 interview about the Houthis with someone who has contact with them (which I’ll share as Part 2), I did some reading and want to share context you should know. So let’s start with a collection of facts… and yes, I’ve added memes to spice things up.

Please read this first, then listen to the interview which I will publish as a podcast episode.
